As long as we have mining and mineral processing, tailings and the responsible management thereof will remain at the forefront with a company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, in part, a reflection of how well tailings risks are being managed.
The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) was published in August 2020, aiming to prevent catastrophic failure of tailings facilities by providing operators with specified measures and approaches throughout the mine life cycle, taking into account multiple stakeholder perspectives. Kimberly (Kim) Finke Morrison is the Senior Director, Global Tailings Management, of Newmont in Denver, Colorado, where she is responsible for functional oversight of tailings and embankments at Newmont’s global operations and legacy sites, including reviewing and developing standards and guidelines, overseeing governance programs, providing peer reviews, leading risk assessments, and managing training and development programs.
Six days before the failure of Dam I at the Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine near Brumadinho, Brazil, Kim was in Belo Horizonte overlooking the valley where the failure would soon occur, and she was on her flight home when the failure happened. This devastating event had far-reaching global impacts, including development of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, but personally affected Kim, increasing her passion to drive the industry toward improved tailings management practices.
