About Registered Membership

Registered Membership refers to a specific membership type. The Registered Member Program was created in response to members who perform specialized functions relating to reserve consulting and reporting and need to satisfy the overseas requirement as a Competent/Qualified Person (QP) in that they belong to a Recognized Overseas Professional Organization (ROPO). A Registered Member is a scientist, engineer or technologist who is involved in various ways with the discovery, extraction and utilization of minerals, metals and energy sources. The membership includes geologists and other geoscientists, mining engineers and metallurgists, environmentalist, other engineers and other scientists and technologists.

If you are an existing SME Registered Member you are required to do the following to maintain your Registered Member status

  • Review and accept the SME Registered Member Code of Ethics once a year
  • Declare your Area(s) of Competency
  • Earn 30 or more Professional Development Hours (PDH) within a two year period. You may be subject to an audit of your continuing education, if asked you will be required to provide a copy of your continuing education log as well as proof of earned PDHs

Code of Ethics

All Registered Members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME) are required to comply with this Code of Ethics.

  1. The first responsibility and the highest duty of members shall at all times be the welfare, health and safety of the community.
  2. Members shall act so as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity and dignity of the profession.
  3. Members shall perform work only in their areas of competence.
  4. Members shall build their professional reputation on merit and shall not compete unfairly.
  5. Members shall apply their skill and knowledge in the interests of their employer or client for whom they shall act, in professional matters, as faithful agents or trustees.
  6. Members shall give evidence, express opinions or make statements in an objective and truthful manner and on the basis of adequate knowledge.
  7. Members shall continue their professional development throughout their careers and shall actively assist and encourage those under their direction to advance their knowledge and experience.
  8. Members shall comply with all laws and government regulations relating to the mineral industries, and with the rules, regulations and practices as established and promulgated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other comparable regulatory authorities in other jurisdictions with respect to the official listing requirements for mining and other companies.

Continuing Education

When you are accepted as a Registered Member, you are now required to stay current with your professional development. As a Registered Member you are now required to have 30 Professional Development Hours (PDH) within any two year period. Reporting PDH accumulation is required, and it is your responsibility to keep track of your PDH hours in your log book.
