Underground structures, like highway, rail and water tunnels are a key component of transportation. Many of these tunnels provide service continuously for over 100 years. This requires the facility to be maintained in service during the repair/restauration work. The latest techniques implement high resolution 3D data to support tunnel inspections. Hybrid 3D models combining true-color photos (with a resolution of 0.039 x 0.039 in) with LiDAR data allow the performance of a virtual inspection in a safe and secure environment at the computer instead of in the field. Fast mobile 3D scanners, like the Dibit ALTIRA, ensure the data capture takes place within a shorter timeframe making sure that maintenance related tunnel shutdowns can be reduced by up to 80 %. Inspections based on 3D models ensure more valuable datasets and superior asset information which minimize risk and operational disruptions tremendously. In addition, the dataset is easy comparable to future inspections as it shows objective information without only relying on the interpretation of the inspector. Future 3D based inspections can therefore increase the credibility of the deficiency mapping by comparing both datasets simultaneously.
