Technical papers from international contributors illustrate the emerging utility of mineral biotechnology, or the use of microorganisms in facets of mineral processing from mining to waste disposal and management. They present case studies and details of specific technologies. Co-editors Kawatra (Michigan Technological U.) and Natarajan (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) have divided the papers into four sections that address aspects of biobeneficiation, bioleaching, bioremediation, and biomineralization. Papers are presented in sections on: Biobeneficiation (6 papers); Bioleaching (3 papers) Bioremediation (5 papers); and Biominearlisation (4 papers). Papers are included on the roles of various bacteria and other organisms in the surface modification and selective floatation of minerals and impurities, as well as the mobilization of metals. The biological leaching of base metals, uranium, refractory gold and manganese nodules is discussed and the treatment of cyanide complexes, air pollutants and acid drainage considered. The volume has a subject index. IMM Abstracts Sept 2001 Vol 51, No 3
This new millennium belongs to biotechnology. Rapid progress is being made in minerals processing based on biological principles. Microorganisms can play a beneficial role in all facets of minerals processing, from mining to waste disposal and management. Biohydrometallurgical extraction of metals from a wide variety of ores is being commercially practiced all over the world and especially in Canada, the United States, Russia, South America, Australia, and Europe. The interactions among biotechnology, metals, and minerals are relevant to a number of emerging in interdisciplinary areas such as biogenesis and biomineralization, biomaterials processing and biomimetics, ceramics and biomedical engineering, biomineral beneficiation, bioleaching, biocorrosion, biofouling, biodeterioration, and bioenvironmental control. This book contains 18 articles divvied into four main sections titled Biobeneficiation; Bioleaching; Bioremediation; and Biominerilaztion. Written by industry experts, the book provides the technical knowledge necessary to complete in this arena by presenting specific detailed technologies and real-world case studies.
